The coin collection of National Museum is remarkable for the variety, rarity and antiquity of various classes of Indian coins it represents. The entire history of Indian coinage (starting from about 6th century B.C. to the end of 19th century A.D.) is well represented here. At present, the collection comprises 1,18,000 coins of gold, silver, copper and of the alloys-billon, potin and lead. These coins were acquired as treasure trove, hoards, gifts and through the purchases. The famous Parrukh Collection, Jhalan Collection, Nagu Collection, Vyas Collection, Deshikachari Collection and a few specimens of Gupta gold coins of Bayana hoard from this invaluable collection as one of the richest coin cabinets of India. Almost half of the collection represents the coinage of Northern India from the earliest time to present day. Besides this, 310 copper plates and insriptions of different periods also enrich the collection. The gallery displays only 204 coins and 10 copper plates (some are in sets) in the seven showcases.
