The
coin collection of National Museum is remarkable for the variety,
rarity and antiquity of various classes of Indian coins it represents.
The entire history of Indian coinage (starting from about 6th century
B.C. to the end of 19th century A.D.) is well represented here.
At present, the collection comprises 1,18,000 coins of gold, silver,
copper and of the alloys-billon, potin and lead. These coins were
acquired as treasure trove, hoards, gifts and through the purchases.
The famous Parrukh Collection, Jhalan Collection, Nagu Collection,
Vyas Collection, Deshikachari Collection and a few specimens of
Gupta gold coins of Bayana hoard from this invaluable collection
as one of the richest coin cabinets of India. Almost half of the
collection represents the coinage of Northern India from the earliest
time to present day. Besides this, 310 copper plates and insriptions
of different periods also enrich the collection. The gallery displays
only 204 coins and 10 copper plates (some are in sets) in the seven
showcases.
