There
are about six universities in India which have Museology Departments.
These universities do not have independent Art Conservation Department
as such, Some universities offer History of Art without any emphasis
on the global art.
Besides, most of these universities are without any museum and the
required infrastructural facilities such as laboratory, slide
library, documentation centre etc. This somehow resulted in
inadequate-practical training, leaning more on theories.
All these objectives, as envisaged, could be achieved only when
an unique 'Museum University' having infrastructural facilities
like a formidable conservation laboratory, a multi-disciplinary
collection of art-objects, library of art-books and slides, work-shop,
photography department, educational unit etc. are at hand. And that
is where the National Museum Institute fulfills the whole objectives
of a 'Museum University'-the first of its kind in Asia.
